Community Needs Assessment

Understanding the Community’s Needs

As a community action agency, the Community Renewal Team (CRT) is responsible for conducting a Community Needs Assessment once every three years. This study provides is a powerful look at what it’s like to live in our area. A snapshot is taken of the economic well-being, educational status, health and welfare of the entire region that we serve.

The results of surveys, in-person interviews, extensive data analysis and research conducted by CRT informs the work that we do and the major initiatives that we undertake. For example, when CRT saw the numbers of homeless veterans rising sharply, we began working to establish Veterans Crossing. And recognizing that CRT serves a population that is more than 50% female, we worked to open our Women’s Empowerment Center in Hartford.

Rigorous Methodologies

Our Planning Department utilizes a multiple method approach to identify the conditions and causes of poverty in the communities we serve.  CRT explores poverty related conditions by combining primary and secondary sources of qualitative and quantitative data sets.   CRT conducts consumer and stakeholder surveys throughout the region to solicit feedback about agency programs, approach and services needed (gaps).

CRT’s research team then identifies existing and emerging community needs from an examination of this information and the best available data from more than 25 of the most reputable local, statewide, and federal sources. Equipped with up-to-date information, CRT moves forward and designs innovative solutions that change lives and create opportunity.

CRT often works with research institutions like Yale University; several divisions of the University of Connecticut, including the School of Social Work, Neag School of Education, and the Center for Public Health to conduct program evaluations, explore new program possibilities and ensure best practices.
