Understanding the Community’s Needs
As a community action agency, the Community Renewal Team (CRT) is responsible for conducting a Community Needs Assessment once every three years. This study provides is a powerful look at what it’s like to live in our area. A snapshot is taken of the economic well-being, educational status, health and welfare of the entire region that we serve.
The results of surveys, in-person interviews, extensive data analysis and research conducted by CRT informs the work that we do and the major initiatives that we undertake. For example, when CRT saw the numbers of homeless veterans rising sharply, we began working to establish Veterans Crossing. And recognizing that CRT serves a population that is more than 50% female, we worked to open our Women’s Empowerment Center in Hartford.
Our Planning Department conducts a written survey of more than 1,000 randomly-chosen households throughout the region; organizes focus groups of program participants; and conducts at least 30 in-person interviews with key community leaders and organizational partners.
The research team identifies existing and emerging community needs from an examination of this information and the best available data from more than 25 of the most reputable local, statewide, and federal sources. Equipped with up-to-date information, CRT moves forward and designs innovative solutions that changes lives and creates opportunity.
CRT often works with research institutions like Yale University; several divisions of the University of Connecticut, including the School of Social Work, Neag School of Education, and the Center for Public Health; and the Institute for Community Research to explore new program possibilities and ensure best practices.
CRT Generations and Veterans Crossing are two excellent examples of how CRT recognized and responded to critical needs within the community.
